A service code is a special code that applies a discount to the TurboTax Online fee provided by our support specialists for specific, pre-determined reasons. They aren't considered online coupons or 'groupons'. We don't issue service codes for third-party discounts from affiliates like USAA because our affiliates have their own TurboTax-branded websites that automatically apply the discount. Service codes are valid through October 15 and can be used only once. Returns will not accept multiple service codes. Please see the link for more details. People come to TurboTax AnswerXchange for help and answers—we want to let them know that we're here to listen and share our knowledge.

We do that with the style and format of our responses. Here are five guidelines: • Keep it conversational. When answering questions, write like you speak. Imagine you're explaining something to a trusted friend, using simple, everyday language. Avoid jargon and technical terms when possible. When no other word will do, explain technical terms in plain English. • Be clear and state the answer right up front.
Ask yourself what specific information the person really needs and then provide it. Stick to the topic and avoid unnecessary details. Break information down into a numbered or bulleted list and highlight the most important details in bold. • Be concise.
Aim for no more than two short sentences in a paragraph, and try to keep paragraphs to two lines. A wall of text can look intimidating and many won't read it, so break it up.
It's okay to link to other resources for more details, but avoid giving answers that contain little more than a link. • Be a good listener. When people post very general questions, take a second to try to understand what they're really looking for. Then, provide a response that guides them to the best possible outcome. • Be encouraging and positive. Look for ways to eliminate uncertainty by anticipating people's concerns. Make it apparent that we really like helping them achieve positive outcomes.

Getting started Setting up the account is very easy and straightforward. You will have to answer some questions that are crucial to determine your tax brackets, deductions and tax related aspects.
Those are typical questions you could expect wherever you have you tax return prepared. Some of those include: – Your age – Where you lived at the end of the last calendar year (zip code only). – Marital status. – Whether any of the following apply: Owned a home, rented, or was a student. After this initial step you can provide even more details of what happened to you financially in the prior year. Those situations may or may not apply to everyone, but disclosing as much information as possible will help generate the most accurate tax return.
TurboTax Self-Employed also covers the following: – Gambling winnings. – Rental property income. – Alimony received. – Farm income Once you select all that applies, the software creates a summary of the information you provided and begin the portion of entering the details of different forms you selected. Up until this point, it shouldn’t take you more that 30 minutes to get to this point and that includes setting up the account. The next stage will vary in time based on complexity of your work and number of forms you received. This section involves answering additional personal questions (social security number, whether or not someone can claim you as a dependent, etc.) and providing income and expenses details for federal and state taxes.
